Food safety in Kenya: safeguarding consumer’s interest and the role of different actors in the agri-food system

This debate took place on Thursday 7th DECEMBER 2023

Started at 02:00 PM East African time

In Kenya, fresh fruits and vegetables are rated high among the most consumed commodities from the agricultural division. However, pests and diseases consistently threaten the productivity of the horticultural sector, thus necessitating the use of pesticides to enhance productivity and preserve produce. These pesticides are not carefully applied at times, posing risks to food safety, and affecting the health of humans and the environment.

CABI and partners sought to generate a conversation on mitigating pesticide risks in fresh fruits and vegetables in Kenya, proposing potential solutions for policy, industry, producers and other value chain actors. They hosted an online discussion where expert data and views were presented to stimulate the discussion on the topic.

The online event aimed to bring together experts to discuss the food safety trajectory for Kenya to safeguard consumers’ interests and the role of different actors in the agri-food system, and make recommendations for policy and practice to ensure food safety in Kenya.
