Stellenbosch University was the birthplace of apartheid and much of its research during the apartheid era was focused on maintaining white minority rule. Its first black vice-chancellor, Russel Botman, has introduced a new culture to the university in which research plays a central role in Africa’s development.

This is part of the Africa’s PhD Renaissance series funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
