For thousands of Africans living overseas and seeking ways to contribute to the development of the continent, initiatives to staunch the outflow of professional expertise are offering new opportunities.


In this article Gumisai Mutume describes a number of these initiatives that either attempt to use the Internet to facilitate interaction between expatriates and their home countries or aim to entice skilled professionals to return to Africa.


He reports that despite the relative success of such initiatives — and growing political will to back them up — the organisations involved face the challenge of attracting larger numbers of participants.
