[NEW DELHI] The leader of an Indian University, Balwant Singh Rajput, has resigned after an enquiry found him guilty of plagiarism.

A government committee was set up last year after he was accused of plagiarism by a group of American physicists (see ‘Indian plagiarism allegations under scrutiny’, 19 December 2002).

The committee found that a paper authored by Rajput — vice chancellor of Kumaun University in northern India — and his student SC Joshi, was indeed copied from one by a Stanford University professor published six years earlier in the journal Physical Review.
