<p>[NEW DELHI] The leader of an Indian University, Balwant Singh Rajput, has resigned after an enquiry found him guilty of plagiarism.<BR><BR>A government committee was set up last year after he was accused of plagiarism by a group of American physicists (see ‘<a href="/News/index.cfm?fuseaction=readnews&itemid=716&language=1" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/tracking/external/'+this.href);" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indian plagiarism allegations under scrutiny’, 19 December 2002</A>). <BR><BR>The committee found that a paper authored by Rajput — vice chancellor of Kumaun University in northern India — and his student SC Joshi, was indeed copied from one by a Stanford University professor published six years earlier in the journal <em>Physical Review</em>.</p>
