Around the world, science organisations are adapting to the opportunities and pressures of the digital age. Yet the capacity to respond is uneven – especially in contexts where resources are constrained.
To explore how digital transformation can strengthen science systems, the International Science Council led the Digital Journeys project. Working with eleven member organisations,, the project examined what ‘digital maturity’ looks like in practice, and how organisations can evolve their strategies, culture, and systems to thrive in the digital age.
From this work, a set of practical tools have been built, to help organisations reflect, plan, and act to harness digital. Here are some of the most hands-on tools:
- Digital Maturity Compass – A structured self-assessment to understand where a science organisation stands across strategy, systems, skills, and stakeholder engagement.
- User Journey Mapping – A template to see through the eyes of members, policymakers, or partners, and identify ways to improve their experience.
- Planning Your Online Conference – A step-by-step guide to design inclusive, engaging online or hybrid events, with worksheets to help planning.
