Pakistan floods driven by climate change, say UN officials

The recent floods in Pakistan could turn out to be the worst impact of climate change to date, according to UN climate experts.

Scientists at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said last week (11 August) that there is no doubt that higher global temperatures were behind the floods.

"There's no doubt that clearly the climate change is contributing, a major contributing factor," Ghassem Asrar, director of the World Climate Research Programme and the WMO, said in an interview with Climatewire.

Warmer temperatures likely contributed to the heavy rains. Satellites reveal that around one-fifth of Pakistan is submerged underwater.

Mudslides in eastern China and the heat wave and fires in Russia have also been linked to the same cause.

"The connecting factor is that clearly the warming is a driver for all these events," said Asrar.

"The occurrence of all these events at almost the same time raises questions about their possible linkages to the predicted increase in intensity and frequency of extreme events, for example as stipulated in the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report published in 2007," said the WMO in a report.

Currently the Indus River is at its highest recorded water level in more than 100 years, and the floods have displaced up to 20 million — and killed an estimated 1,600 people — since they started a month ago.

"This is a disaster which has affected many more people than I have ever seen," said John Holmes, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The reasons for floods in Pakistan could be many and climate change could be one of them. Forest cover in Pakistan is depleting day by day due to rapid urbanization as well as other factors. One should also know that floods usually come from eastern rivers, this time around they came from River Kabul and ther waestern rivers. It is also worth mentioning here that Pakistan has early monitoring system which is only for rivers coming from the eastern side. India can not be ruled out as a factor as it opens its dams during flood conditions and excessive water goes to Pakistan. What Pakistan needs to do on short term basis is to have a comprehensive early moniteering system which will reduce loss of innocent lives.

Obviously, climate change is one of the major challenges faced by the world. Melting of glaciers, forest fires, rising of sea level etc. are the clear indication of climate change. Whenever, there is a talk on climate change only developing and least developing countries considered responsible/blamed for aggrevation of this issue. Contarary to this, all scientific studies reveal that developed countries, like America, UK,China, Japan etc. are the major contributors/producers of green house gases. It is a real calamity that the world so called environmental controllers are directly involved in this issue. But one thing that really pinching me that why WMO is ruling out the involvement of US HAARP project in recent worst flooding in Pakistan. WMO should take notice of the voice of the media, print media and renowed environmentalist of the world that are stating/narrating the hideous role of HAARP in recent Pakistan flooding.

The current devastating floods in Pakistan were mainly caused by the above mentioned factors and it is a reality but one could not deny the HAARP technology of developed countries. It should also be the focus of renewed scholars to avoid such things in the future if it would be a reality. Climate change is contributing or not but it is a fact that we ourselves are the major contributors. We do not have technology we do not have the will to invest these areas and we do not have even a sense to cope with these issues. We are like a child who jumped from a high wall and lost his one leg when he was asked why? He answered actually satan (Shaitan) was responsible because he told me that this will not be too much costy and difficult.
