The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) has joined forces with a leading global agricultural think-tank in a bid to improve policies on agriculture and food security in Africa.

The collaboration between NEPAD and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), based in Washington DC, was formalised this week in a Memorandum of Understanding for joint work in food policy research, capacity building and policy communications in Africa.

“At recent meetings of NEPAD’s heads of state, delegates emphasised that agriculture and food security should be the number one priority for African development,” says Joachim von Braun, director general of IFPRI. “This collaboration between NEPAD and IFPRI will assist in moving that commitment forward.”

Under the three-year agreement, the two organisations will jointly map out an agenda for food policy research, and design development strategies related to food, agriculture and natural resources in Africa.
