Researchers in Uganda have discovered a small group of individuals living near Lake Victoria who have remained uninfected with HIV despite having unprotected sex with HIV-positive partners.

They say that studying how the individuals’ immune systems keep the virus at bay could help scientists develop an effective vaccine against AIDS.

The findings, which come from the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, are expected to be published later this year.
