Nigeria’s president Olusegun Obasanjo has said that intensifying research and development in science, engineering and technology is key to the country’s industrial future.

He called on science and technology professionals to advise the government on how best to adopt a national innovation system and integrate it into Nigeria’s national development framework.

The 17 May announcement marked the start of a two-day workshop challenging Nigerian scientists to develop techniques that will help local manufacturers compete with companies from industrialised nations.

To speed up the process, the government is now looking at the ‘technology business incubator’ model to foster technology-based start-up companies and ensure that research and development findings can be commercialised quickly.

It intends to complement this scheme by establishing industrial parks in each of the country’s states through the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria.
