Swaminathan to lead Pugwash Conferences
Indian geneticist M.S. Swaminathan is to become the next president of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, the influential nuclear non-proliferation group that was launched nearly 50 years ago by Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell.
Swaminathan, whose work on crop genetics and sustainable agriculture has played an important role in helping to improve India’s food supply, is currently chairman of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Chennai that works to promote sustainable development.
He was elected as president last week at the 51st Pugwash Conference in Agra, India, and is the first Indian ever to lead the organisation.
