Soil scientist wins World Food Prize

Pedro Sanchez, a soil scientist originally from Cuba, has been selected as the recipient of this year’s World Food Prize.

Currently a visiting professor of tropical resources at the University of California at Berkeley and chair of the United Nations Millennium Project Task Force on World Hunger, Sanchez was specially commended for his groundbreaking work improving soil quality in Brazil and East Africa.

“It is clear that Dr. Pedro Sanchez’s achievements offer great promise that the Green Revolution can be spread through sub-Saharan Africa,” UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said in a statement following this week’s announcement of the prize winner.

The US$250,000 prize is the foremost international award recognising the achievements of individuals who have improved the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. It will be presented to Sanchez, who is a citizen of the United States, at an award ceremony in Iowa, on 24 October.
