<p><P>Chinese and Indian researchers are being offered free experimental mice from an international network launched last week.</P><br />
<P>Scientists studying how embryos develop use genetically modified mice to learn how genes function. But creating the experimental animals is costly and beyond the means of many laboratories in developing countries.</P><br />
<P>The RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB) in Kobe, Japan, will genetically modify the mice to order and at no cost in return for co-authorship on the first research paper arising from their use. By retaining ownership of the mice, the CDB aims to make them available to all scientists.</P><br />
<P>The service is being offered through the newly formed Asia-Pacific Developmental Biology Network. The network is intended to allow researchers throughout the region to share facilities and conduct collaborative research. </P><br />
