Mao SotThe Shoklo Malaria Research Unit of Mae Sot, Thailand, is one of the world’s leading centres for studying the disease. Here, scientists are fighting a strain of the malaria parasite that is resistant to artemisinin derivatives.

This makes these drugs less effective and could eventually render them obsolete. François Nosten, the unit’s director, warns that millions of lives are at stake.
