Last month, Nature published an editorial stating that African nations should be given the responsibility for deciding how to spend money provided to them as aid (see Africa must set own agenda for science aid).

In this letter to the editor of Nature, Justin Hategekimana agrees that "the future of Africa is in the hands of Africa" but says that money is not all the continent needs to ensure its sustainable development.

Good management, relevant projects and a boost to science and technology are also needed, says Hategekimana, who received a scholarship from the Rwandan Department of Education to study computer science in the United States.
