Ethical Considerations in HIV Preventive Vaccine Research
This document produced by the United Nations Programme on AIDS provides ethical guidance on eighteen different points relevant to vaccine trials. These include approval of research protocols, community participation, the potential harms and benefits of vaccines, informed consent and the use of placebo controls, and care and treatment of trial volunteers. It has the recommendation of a number of researchers and organisations currently involved in clinical trials.
The guidance was formulated following recognition that many candidate vaccines for HIV/AIDS would be studied simultaneously in different populations around the world, requiring a large international cooperative effort.
