On July 24, SciDev.Net paid tribute to its founder and former director David Dickson, who died of a sudden heart attack on July 31, 2013, with this memorial lecture by Chris Whitty, Chief Scientific Advisor at DFID.
 
Whitty discussed the role of scientific evidence in policymaking as well as the importance of the media in building bridges between science and politics.
