The number of AIDS vaccines moving through the pipeline toward clinical trials has increased over recent years.

But significant scientific and operational challenges remain, not least because a slew of experiments in monkeys — the favoured model for testing vaccine strategies — has raised questions about most of the vaccine approaches now being pursued.

As a result, some scientists fear that none of the vaccines now in human trials will work.
