<p>After the Second High Level Meeting of the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/energy/scidev-net-at-large/overambitious-energy-targets-leave-africa-dark.html">Africa-EU Energy Partnership</a>, which highlighted the problems of <a href="https://www.scidev.net/environment/energy/">energy</a> production on the continent, scientists are more focused on improving energy access and supply in Africa, as well as the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/sustainability/">sustainability</a> of the current economic models behind them.<br />

Izael Pereira Da Silva, director of the Centre of Excellence in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development at Strathmore University, Kenya, is optimistic about the future of energy provision in Africa. He suggests the implementation of more effective distribution systems, based on small-scale renewable energy.<br />
 <br />
Pilot projects are already in place, but more support is needed from governments and private sector to guarantee a steady growth of the industry and tackle energy poverty.</p>
