Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Division of Medical Virology, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University
A position for a postdoctoral fellow is available in the Division of Medical Virology at Stellenbosch University within the Emerging Viruses Research Group led by Prof. Wolfgang Preiser. The proposed fellowship will focus on investigating the diversity and ecology of coronaviruses in bat populations of South Africa. The project will aim to obtain full length genome sequences of novel coronaviruses recently identified in our region and investigate their potential to infect other hosts, including humans, using pseudovirus-based assays.

The postdoctoral candidate will be expected to plan and perform laboratory experiments and to contribute significantly to the publication of research outputs. The postdoctoral candidate will have the opportunity to work on his or her research project as an individual but also be part of a team comprising postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students at doctoral, Masters and Honours level; the fellow will be encouraged to gain experience in co-supervision of student projects.

The fellowship is available for a period of one year and the candidate should be ready to start as soon as possible after the appointment. Please note that postdoctoral fellows are not appointed as employees and their fellowships are awarded tax free. They are therefore not eligible for employee benefits.

•         PhD in Medical Virology or related field, obtained within the past 5 years
•         Extensive laboratory experience in molecular biology and cell culture techniques, especially design of PCR assays, cloning, and production of pseudoviruses
•         Comprehensive knowledge of coronaviruses and the field of emerging viruses
•         Proficiency in statistical and analytical applications
•         Computing literacy, with emphasis on Microsoft Office and the use of bioinformatics and phylogenetic software programs
•         Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent command of English in writing and speaking
