<p>The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria made its first call for funding proposals on 29 January at the close of its first board meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.<BR><BR>The Fund, a private-public initiative set up last year to channel money into the prevention and treatment of the three killer diseases, has US$1.9 billion to disburse.<BR><BR>“AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria have a devastating global impact,” said Team Leader of the Secretariat Paul Ehmer. “The streamlined grant-making process we are announcing today is designed to minimise unnecessary delays, and maximise the support available for frontline efforts to control these epidemics.”<BR><BR>© SciDev.Net 2002</p>
