The first Science and Technology in Society forum, organised by Japan’s former science minister Koji Omi, is to take place next week (11-14 Nov) in Kyoto. Nobel laureates, scientists, politicians, policymakers and journalists will meet to discuss ways that science can address problems facing developing countries.

The forum will focus on five areas: information technologies, capacity building, bioethics, energy and the environment, and bioterrorism. It will look at global problems from the different perspectives of developed and developing countries.

Funded by the Japanese government and businesses, the meeting will feature German, Japanese and UK presentations on ‘clean’ energy. Representatives from China, India and Sudan plan to talk about the challenge of meeting energy needs in developing countries.
