<p><P>A new international research programme has named the research groups that will benefit from its £12 million fund for studies into key health concerns in the Asia-Pacific region.</P><br />
<P>Researchers from New Guinea, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, China, Fiji, Thailand, The Philippines and Malaysia will work with colleagues from Australia and New Zealand as part of the programme, which is funded by the Australian and New Zealand governments together with the Wellcome Trust, the UK’s largest biomedical research charity.</P><br />
<P>The 11 research projects to be funded by the programme were officially announced in Australia this week. Topics to be investigated include malaria, pesticide poisoning, schistosomiasis and obesity.</P><br />
<P>“These projects will not only focus on some of the most pressing health concerns of the region, they will provide valuable two-way training,” said Australia’s federal minister for health and ageing, Kay Patterson, when announcing the projects. “Any research outcomes have potential to be groundbreaking and of use to countries worldwide facing similar health problems.”</P><br />
