<p>The Asia-Pacific region has the second highest urban population growth after Africa, with an annual growth of 2.6 per cent since 1990. As a result, Asian <a href="http://www.scidev.net/asia-pacific/governance/cities/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">cities</a> are growing bigger and bigger, and even contributing to <a href="http://www.scidev.net/asia-pacific/environment/climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">climate change</a>.</p>
<p>Richard Friend, a social scientist and director of the Thailand-based international regional office of the Institute for Social and Environmental Transition, a non-profit organisation, talks to SciDev.Net in this podcast about the relationship of urbanisation, climate change and <a href="http://www.scidev.net/asia-pacific/governance/human-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">human right</a>s. He believes that resilient actions should take the urban poor into account and ensure that collective rights are not eroded by economic interests.</p>
