Surat finished her PhD in life sciences from  Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. She spent my graduate school peering down a microscope to understand how tissues create beautiful patterns during development. Since then, she has been working as a freelance science writer and editor. She has written for Nature India, IndiaBioscience, Scidev.net (UK), The Wire, Skeptic (US), Biotechniques (UK), Science Reporter, Current Science, Dream 2047, Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) blog among others. She has also explored other avenues of science communication, like videos and infographics.
