China 'needs coherent climate change policy'

A leading Chinese meteorologist has called on his country to develop a uniform climate change policy in order to coordinate diplomatic, economic and social activities needed to sustain China's development.

Highlighting the current lack of a national strategy aimed at addressing global warming, Qin Dahe, head of the Chinese National Meteorological Administration, appealed for more research funding and development of a nationwide climate system observation network.

China has registered an average temperature increase between 0.4 and 0.5 ºC over the past century. But the rate of warming is predicted to increase, and average temperatures are expected to rise by 2.2 ºC by 2050.
