Scientists from South Africa and neighbouring countries are making moves towards setting up an African Institute of Space Science (AISS).

The initiative, which would combine existing space science activities in South Africa into a more coherent and holistic approach, has been embraced by the country’s National Research Foundation.

Many scientists agree that a joint regional effort could lead to a coordinated strategy to harness space science for the development of Africa without crippling investments for any individual country.
