Africa’s 130-odd volcanoes raise many intriguing questions, but remain largely unstudied because of poverty, civil war and inaccessibility.

In this article, Kevin Krajick reports on the efforts of African scientists in Cameroon and Congo to monitor and study active volcanoes, despite a lack of resources.

Conditions are tough. Scientists must rely on foreign grants to ship rock samples abroad for analysis, and although African nations could reduce this dependence by sharing instruments and other resources, both politics and poor communication hinder cooperation.
