<p><P>Development efforts must include engineering projects if Africa is to initiate and sustain economic growth, argues Calestous Juma in this article in Business Daily Africa.</P><br />
<P>Large engineering projects such as dam construction have been linked with ecological damage, economic mismanagement and corruption. So development agencies have become increasingly reluctant to support plans for large infrastructure.</P><br />
<P>But, argues Juma, engineering projects can create jobs, provide clean water and good healthcare and deliver critical infrastructure for increasing agricultural productivity.</P><br />
<P>Africa must build up its engineering capability, Juma says, to provide the technology and know-how to control disease, manage complex ecosystems and deal with the impacts of climate change. </P><br />
