Development efforts must include engineering projects if Africa is to initiate and sustain economic growth, argues Calestous Juma in this article in Business Daily Africa.

Large engineering projects such as dam construction have been linked with ecological damage, economic mismanagement and corruption. So development agencies have become increasingly reluctant to support plans for large infrastructure.

But, argues Juma, engineering projects can create jobs, provide clean water and good healthcare and deliver critical infrastructure for increasing agricultural productivity.

Africa must build up its engineering capability, Juma says, to provide the technology and know-how to control disease, manage complex ecosystems and deal with the impacts of climate change.

This can be done, he says, by supporting institutions of higher technical learning to build up domestic engineering skills.
