More than 80 per cent of the energy consumed in Tanzania is used for domestic tasks such as cooking and lighting. Most of it is needed in rural areas and is provided by wood fuel, which causes deforestation, soil degradation and, ultimately, lower crop yields. The first phase of the Tanzania Domestic Biogas Programme ended at the beginning of 2014. What progress has it made and what challenges remain?
