Innovation in science and health

The recent editorial (see Can Africa pioneer a new way of doing science?) presents an interesting perspective and is part of a growing literature on the topic. An article written by Bhavya Lal and myself in Issues in Science and Technology last year begins to outline the systems in which innovation could occur. There are several programmes geared at building research capacity such as those sponsored by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust, among others. I welcome any comments on this topic.
