Bringing science and development together through news and analysis

Recording and using indigenous knowledge

This manual provides guidelines for implementing development projects that take IK into consideration. It offers ‘building blocks’ that users can put together to meet their specific objectives when recording and assessing IK. The manual describes many methods, and recommends general procedures and rules of conduct.

The manual includes:

  • an overview of IK;
  • more than 30 descriptions of methods for recording and assessing IK;
  • an assessment of the usefulness of IK;
  • 11 mini case studies illustrating how projects can build on IK; and
  • guides to questions relating to recording IK in over 20 subject areas.
This very practical book will guide the reader through all the steps of recording and using IK. It provides rural development workers with the information and tools they need to integrate IK into their development work.
