Bringing science and development together through news and analysis
A resource kit for sustainable development researchers in dryland Africa
This resource kit has been developed by the International Development Research Centre in Canada, and deals with issues of land degradation in dryland regions of Africa.
The kit has six sections:
a brief overview of IK;
participation of local people, gender sensitivity, and protecting rights to knowledge;
field methods for collecting IK;
how IK can be used for sustainable development, and how it can be evaluated and combined with scientific knowledge;
readings on IK; and
a short annotated list of selected resources;
The kit acts as a useful a reference tool for researchers and development specialists working in this area, helping them to plan ethical and effective approaches to IK research. The material invites questions and further inquiry, and can be seen as a starting point for anyone working in the field of IK.
