Part time opportunities in SciDev.Net Middle East & North Africa Region

SciDev.Net is the world's leading source of news and analysis on science and technology for the global south. Our mission is to put science at the heart of global development, allowing decision-makers to draw on evidence and insights from science for more effective policy and programmes.

We are expanding our regional operations in the Middle East on North Africa Region by increasing our media coverage and launching a new Arabic language website. To support this expansion we are creating the following new positions in our Egypt office based in Cairo.

The positions:

Copy Editor, Sub Editor, User Engagement Coordinator, Assistant Editor, Digital Producer (See below for full details of Terms of Reference)

Copy editor

(0.5 FTE, 17.5 hours per week)          £7/ hour

The Copy editor is responsible for correcting and proofreading the Arabic content of the MENA gateway, ensuring that all materials (text and titles) are linguistically correct. 

The work will involve:

Responsible for reviewing all linguistic aspects of the Arabic material (articles, titles, blurbs, captions, and multimedia content, notices, containers and promotional content) on the MENA gateway of SciDev.net website; This will involve:

  • Checking the correctness of the Arabic texts, to be in consistence with the correct Arabic linguistic norms relating to grammar rules, syntax, punctuation, spelling and style conformity;
  • Proofreading the Arabic text with the aim of identifying and correcting grammatical errors or propose amendments to the syntax to optimally serve the meaning
  • Advising on suitability of titles and blurbs
  • These tasks will require working in close collaboration with Editors and the User Engagement Manager.
  • Participation in regular editorial meetings to support efficient production of editorial content.
  • The role will be expected to perform additional duties as reasonably commensurate with the role.

Knowledge required:

  • Strong Arabic language checking and proofreading experience
  • Some practical knowledge or experience of daily or weekly journalism
  • A broad interest in science and technology as it relates to the developing world
  • A scientific background is desirable but not essential

Sub editor

(0.5 FTE, 17.5 hours per week)          £13/ hour

We are looking for a sub-editor to handle articles on a range of topics related to the applications of science and technology to the problems facing MENA region, in fields ranging from agriculture and climate change to health.

This will in particular include working on articles written by journalists and other contributors located in the MENA region.

The work will involve:
  • Sub-editing and proof-reading articles from staff, freelance journalists and external contributors, including working closely with each when required
  • Linking all articles to other related articles and sections on the SciDev.Net website, as well as to external document and organisations
  • Writing all headlines and intros, to the satisfaction of the regional co-ordinator.
  • Finding images to accompany articles, and writing relevant captions.
  • Providing additional editorial support as required
  • Post holder will need to be available for subbing materials from other sections (e.g. marketing section)
 
Knowledge and skills required:
Essential
  • At least two years of experience of subbing scientific and/or science-related articles
  • Good knowledge and experience of working with Office 2010 software
  • Ability to focus and good attention to detail
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines under pressure

User engagement coordinator

0.6 FTE, 21 hours per week)      £7/ hour

The MENA region user engagement coordinator is responsible for the implementation of regional user engagement activities that support the aims and objectives of the organisation in MENA region. This includes implementing all marketing activity and promotional communications as part of the global user engagement strategy to raise awareness of SciDev.Net among its key audiences.

 
The work will involve:
  • In line with the regional user engagement strategy, implementing a series of campaigns throughout the year in collaboration with the user engagement manager and the regional coordinator to raise awareness of the content and services that SciDev.Net offers, and measure the impact of these campaigns. Ensure that agreed outcomes and measures of success are met.
  • Implementing the regional social media plans, with the regional editorial team, posting content, communicating with audiences, promoting the SciDev.Net blog and newsfeeds and ensuring consistent branding across networks.
  • Using SciDev.Net templates produce, edit, translate (where appropriate) build and distribute promotional email communications, promotional print materials, and supporting materials for regional campaigns, to meet the needs of a variety of regional audiences contacts.
  • Promoting the syndication of SciDev.Net content from the MENA gateway through a mix of methods including engaging with relevant social media sites or blogs. Provide details of which stories and which websites the content was posted to on a monthly basis to regional coordinator and user engagement manager.
  • Performing regular contact gathering exercises identifying regional websites, online publications, conferences, organisations with shared interests and individuals from our key audiences that could be used in SciDev.Net communications. These contacts are to be used in promotional activities such as Spotlight and other product launches, and all details are to be provided for submission to SciDev.Net’s core CRM system.
  • Assisting the Head of External Relations and regional coordinator in developing relationships and partnerships with media and information networks who might want to syndicate our content, and implement campaigns to drive the syndication partnerships strategy.Providing regular reports to the user engagement manager and regional coordinators on all activities undertaken. Monitoring success and providing feedback on campaigns.
  • Contributing to the development of regional strategies with the user engagement manager, setting annual targets and agreed outcomes. Provide feedback for any regional website developments and other ad hoc regional projects via marketing analysis and understanding.
  • Assisting with the distribution of the annual review
  • Attending meetings and conferences where necessary
  • Managing ad-hoc projects as when they arise, ensuring they meet objectives and are within budget
 
Knowledge required:
  • At least three years' experience in online marketing or communication
  • Practical experience of writing, editing and proofing promotional materials for a variety of audiences
  • Good working knowledge of internet technology and social media tools
  • A working knowledge of English is essential
  • Good design sense, with practical experience of providing design briefs relating to a range of formats
  • Practical knowledge of the print production process, with experience of briefing designers and printers
  • A broad interest in science and technology and/or the developing world
  • A marketing qualification is desirable but not essential.

Assistant editor

(0.6 FTE, 21 hours per week)             £11.50/ hour

Assisting the Regional Coordinator in commissioning, writing, editing, subbing and proofreading news, opinion and feature articles, in line with the objectives of the organisation. Responsible for up keep of the SciDev.Net style guide, and other tasks as required.

 
The work will involve:
  • Commissioning, editing and subediting news, editorials, feature and opinion articles from freelance correspondents and SciDev.Net staff
  • Researching and writing news storiesAssisting the regional co-ordinator in identifying suitable topics for news items through monitoring potential sources including, but not limited to, websites and newspapers, magazines and journals, press releases and personal contacts and Google alerts)
  • Attending press and scientific conferences as required, and reporting from them
  • Undertaking occasional news projects, such as collating background information, links, images, and other relevant material for news focuses
  • Identifying events and announcements, jobs and grants for listing in our notices section
  • Picture researching for images to accompany SciDev.Net articles
  • Support in the production of multimedia content
  • Proof-reading and subediting other material generated by SciDev.Net team members as required
  • Deputising for the regional co-ordinator as required
  • Maintaining calendar of events
  • Provide other editorial support as might be required
Knowledge required:

Digital producer

(0.5 FTE 17.5 hours per week)           £7.50/ hour

The Digital Producer is responsible for quality control around the look and content of each webpage, ensuring that all materials (content and pages) are efficiently produced to the SciDev.Net digital portfolio (website, blog, mobile, email and social media). 

The work will include:
 
Digital production delivery
  • Responsible for quality control around the look and content of each webpage, proofing and posting all material (articles, notices, containers and promotional content) on to the SciDev.Net website via the content management system. This will involve:
  • Ensuring editorial, technical and design accuracy and consistency;
  • Advising on suitability of titles and blurbs (SEO);
  • Creation of copy elements for promotion and digital engagement (through containers and calls to action), and social engagement (such as article Tweets and Facebook posts);
  • Supporting Multimedia and interactive content production to the website;
  • Supporting production of syndicated content elements;
  • These tasks will require working in close collaboration with Editors and the User Engagement Manager.
  • Ensuring production requirements are met in the editorial and marketing house style guides.
  • Coordinating and supporting production across other digital delivery channels, including SEO and email alerts.
  • Responsible for also coordinating non-editorial (i.e. web and marketing) content production tasks to digital delivery, ensuring subediting and translation if required, and that all materials are tracked through the production process.
  • Participation in regular editorial meetings to support efficient production of editorial content.
  • Other production-related tasks, including new and emergent digital production tasks and functions — and supporting any change process — as the needs arise, as directed by Head of Digital.
 
Digital, user and social media engagement
  • Responsible for integration of social media strategy into web and digital product pages.
  • Writing, coordinating, and posting containers for the website and email alerts, plus identifying content gaps for site containers, including writing new copy and picture sourcing as required.
  • Proofreading all email alerts, and building weekly alerts.
  • The role will be expected to perform additional duties as reasonably commensurate with the role.

Administration

  • Supporting the Regional Co-ordinator in compiling and reporting on statistics for efficient production and digital output using CMS, CRM, Google Analytics and associated tools.
  • Researching new tools and opportunities in digital production.
  • Responsible for general image and graphic sourcing for digital products, adhering to and administering budget as appropriate, in liaison with Head of Digital and Regional Co-ordinator.
 
Knowledge required:
  • Strong proofreading and rewriting experience
  • Some practical knowledge or experience of daily or weekly journalism
  • Strong knowledge of the digital production process
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • A broad interest in science and technology as it relates to the developing world
