<p>The importance of effective leadership in <a href="https://www.scidev.net/health/">health</a> services provision has been neglected for too long by many African countries, says Jemal Mohammed, country director for the <a href="http://www.lmgforhealth.org/">Leadership, Management and Governance Project</a> in Ethiopia. In this interview, he talks about the project’s work in strengthening <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/">governance</a> in the Ethiopian health<a href="https://www.scidev.net/health/systems/"> system</a>, the importance of effective management across Africa and why the ongoing <a href="https://www.scidev.net/article-series.ebola-crisis.html">Ebola epidemic </a>can be seen as a failure of governance and leadership.<br />

Mohammed was interviewed while in the United Kingdom attending the Governance for Development in Africa course run by the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.</p>
