<p>Osama bin Laden was killed in a 2011 US special forces raid after his location was pinpointed with the help of a Pakistani doctor who ran a fake hepatitis B vaccination campaign on behalf of the CIA. Because of this, militants in the country now target those involved in <a href="https://www.scidev.net/health/medicine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">polio vaccination efforts</a>. In the past two years, the Taliban has killed more than 15 polio workers and three policemen escorting the vaccination teams in various areas of the country, including Karachi.<br />

Despite government efforts to promote polio vaccinations for children, many people remain suspicious of health workers. As a result, hundreds of thousands of children remain at risk of contracting the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/health/disease/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">disease</a>.</p>
