Osama bin Laden was killed in a 2011 US special forces raid after his location was pinpointed with the help of a Pakistani doctor who ran a fake hepatitis B vaccination campaign on behalf of the CIA. Because of this, militants in the country now target those involved in polio vaccination efforts. In the past two years, the Taliban has killed more than 15 polio workers and three policemen escorting the vaccination teams in various areas of the country, including Karachi.

Despite government efforts to promote polio vaccinations for children, many people remain suspicious of health workers. As a result, hundreds of thousands of children remain at risk of contracting the disease.
