<p>The search for a treatment for malaria, which kills more than a million people every year, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, has been complicated by the emergence of drug resistance.<BR><BR>One new drug, however, which has already been approved for sale by five African nations, is touted by its Canadian manufacturer as safe and exceptionally effective. <BR><BR>But in this article Diane Martindale reports that the drug, known as Malarex, is provoking suspicion in the malaria research community. At best, some researchers claim, the drug has not been adequately tested for safety or efficacy.
