African funding is crucial to ensure the research agenda is driven by the continent rather than foreign donors, says the World Bank’s Peter Materu. Materu, who is practice manager for education in the West and Central Africa region, says that African ownership of research on the continent is weak. Governments and the private sector need to do more to support research, he says.

In this audio interview, he discusses how the World Bank’s flagship Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence project aims to address this problem.

This is part of the Africa’s PhD Renaissance series funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The interview was recorded at Planet Earth Institute’s ScienceAfrica UnConference in London, United Kingdom, on 21 July.
