<p>Africa’s abundant renewable natural resources such as wind, sunshine and <a href="https://www.scidev.net/environment/water/">water</a> could be used to improve <a href="https://www.scidev.net/environment/energy/">energy</a> security for the poor, particularly in rural areas that are off the electricity grid. But <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/policy/">policies</a> and financial <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/aid/">aid</a> are needed to encourage the development of new markets in clean energy.</p>
<p>Philip Mann, senior project manager for the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme, chaired a panel discussion during the Second High Level Meeting of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership, held this week (11-13 February) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On the sidelines of the event, he discusses the importance of reshaping energy policies to unlock funding and support renewable <a href="https://www.scidev.net/enterprise/technology/">technologies</a> in the face of Africa’s increasing energy needs. </p>
