<p>Science and technology underpin the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/sdgs/">Sustainable Development Goals</a> (SDGs), and without a pragmatic approach to fostering research and implementing new <a href="https://www.scidev.net/enterprise/technology/">technologies</a>, the goals will remain aspirations.<br />

Last year, to secure a prominent place for science and technology in the post-2015 agenda, the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/aid/editorials/science-is-a-perfect-but-overlooked-target-for-aid.html">Addis Ababa Action action Agenda on development financing</a> and the <a href="https://www.scidev.net/sdgs/news/science-underpins-new-development-goals.html">outcome document on the SDGs</a> both recommended creating a mechanism to assist developing nations.<br />

The <a href="https://www.scidev.net/technology/news/un-tool-widen-science-and-tech-access.html">Technology Facilitation Mechanism</a> will aid sustainable and lasting scientific <a href="https://www.scidev.net/communication/capacity-building/">capacity building</a> that responds to the specific needs of each country. It will also help coordinate the activities of other UN agencies.<br />

In this interview, we speak with Elmer William Jr Colglazier, a <a href="https://www.scidev.net/governance/science-diplomacy/">science diplomacy</a> expert who is one of the ten members on a <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/topics/technology/facilitationmechanism/10membergroup">U</a><a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/topics/technology/facilitationmechanism/10membergroup">N</a> <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/topics/technology/facilitationmechanism/10membergroup">panel</a> created to support the new mechanism.
