Science and technology indicators within the Sustainable Development Goals should focus on practical solutions for the poor, not just increases in academic research, says John Ouma-Mugabe in this audio comment.

Mugabe, who is professor of science and innovation policy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, argues that many African governments, despite rampant economic growth, are doing far too little to change the ossified social systems that underpin inequality. The new framework for sustainable development is the opportunity to focus on improving public health, education and food production.

“Let countries not just have broad policy approaches to sustainable development, like it has been in the past” he says.
