In lake

The Intha people who live on and around Inle Lake, in Myanmar, are renowned for their custom of fishing while rowing with one leg. For centuries, they developed many ingenious ways to farm and fish on the shallow lake.

This audio slideshow visits the lake, where farmers live in houses on stilts and grow crops on floating farms, and discovers how the growth of tourism threatens the local environment.

Because of sewage spills from hotels and increased use of chemical fertilisers on the floating farms, the lake’s water is now unsafe to drink. Local NGOs are working to raise awareness among Intha to prevent permanent damage to the lake’s ecosystem.
