FOUR50 is building a network of experts, activists and enthusiasts committed to preventing the epidemic of chronic disease and raising awareness about its devastating consequences. It aims to do this by focusing on the 3 risk factors (poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use) that lead to four chronic diseases (CVD, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and some cancers) contributing to more than 50% of deaths worldwide.

Agricultural Research Journal

The Agricultural Research Journal, published by Argentina's National Institute for Agricultural Technology, is an open access science journal that publishes new research in diverse fields of agricultural research.  The website provides information about the editorial process, including guidelines for submitting scientific papers, and publishes relevant news articles. It is available in Spanish and Portuguese.

 

AIDSthai

AIDSthai is an information portal in both English and Thai, covering AIDS research, prevention and care activities in Thailand, supported by the Thai government's Ministry of Public Health. The website includes background information and links on vaccine research, including the Vaccine Trial Centre at Mahidol University in Bangkok.

AlertNet: Alerting humanitarians to emergencies

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

Asia-Pacific National Innovation Systems Online Resource Centre

This online resource centre, run by the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer and Technology, aims to raise policymakers' awareness of the importance of innovation for sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

The website features a directory of grassroots innovations and traditional knowledge. It also publishes information on discussion forums, workshops and seminars, as well as detailed case studies of innovation systems and policy measures in several countries. It provides inks to useful resources and relevant organisations by country.

Biotechnology Information Centre - Malaysia

The BIC website hopes to provide rational information about the applications of biotechnology, especially crop biotechnology, in a local context. The website is the result of a collaboration between ISAAA, Monash University Malaysia and the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre. The website aims to serve as a resource for policy-makers, industry players, the media and members of the public who want scientific information to guide their decision-making. The site is kept very up-to-date and brings together many useful web-based information sources.

Business and Human Rights Resource Centre

The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre examines how human rights-based approaches can be brought to bear on the operations of international corporations and businesses, particularly with regard to environmental, social, and health-related impacts. As international companies can be the drivers of advances in science and technology, the centre aims to encourage companies to respect human rights by providing relevant information and facilitating constructive discussion.

The website provides resources including guidance on human rights grouped by country, issue and sector; information on principles and standards; and useful tools for monitoring performance. It publishes news and weekly alerts on human rights issues related to business.

Cancerworld

This is a portal to the websites of associations that aim to advance our understanding of oncology and how to better treat patients with cancer, both in the developed and developing worlds.

Each partner association is represented in the portal with a website describing and providing information relating to the organisation, its structure, news, research projects, activities, membership, resource information, selected links, and so on.

Cancerworld also hosts the Cancer Media Service, operated by the European School of Oncology and aimed at journalists. The independent service aims to put cancer research into context, which it does by publishing well written and easy-to-read summaries of the latest cancer research. Perhaps even more useful is its list of resources for journalists that includes links to several medical dictionaries and cancer organisations worldwide.

Flu in China; flu information centre

A bilingual Chinese news aggregator for information on bird flu. It provides useful links to new scientific research, public health advice, and a discussion forum. The site is maintained by a company called the Hangzhou Neuro-Hemin Biotech Company, and is funded by registration fees. Paying subscribers can access more information.

Forest Carbon Asia

This website publishes information about climate change mitigation through forest carbon sequestration and storage across Asia. It provides news and views from the media, a library of publications, directories of forest carbon stakeholders, announcements about vacancies and events, links to useful resources and reviews of science and policy developments in the field. The publications section includes in-house articles and research reports that review developments, identify gaps and draw lessons from forest carbon activities in the region. Readers can comment, engage in discussion and contribute information to the website.

HarvestPlus

HarvestPlus works towards reducing micronutrient malnutrition, or 'hidden hunger', by improving the level of micronutrients in staple food crops in Africa and Asia using bio-fortification. It focuses on iron, zinc, and vitamin A — recognised by the WHO as critical micronutrients — and on crops such as millet, wheat, rice and sweet potato.

The website details current activities through an online map and provides access to publications including abstracts, technical monographs, and working papers produced with 60 partner institutions.

A list of links to online resources including reports, articles, and blogs is also made available.

Integrated Regional Information Networks: PlusNews

IRIN provides news, information and reports on humanitarian issues affecting sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia for an estimated daily email readership of over 50,000. This includes the latest HIV/AIDS reports accessible through their PlusNews service.

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

The IISD is a Canadian policy research institute that publishes books, papers and policy briefs on issues affecting sustainable development such as climate change, governance and natural resources. The IISD Reporting Services focuses on environmental issues and publishes news and event coverage as well as the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (see ENB). The organisation also runs the Climate-L.Org blog and hosts a number of networks, including the Trade Knowledge Network and the Sustainable Coffee Partnership.

Makeshift

Makeshift is a quarterly online magazine dedicated to documenting examples of innovation and creativity across the world. It covers topics such as technology, business and art from a range of authors, focused on grassroots projects in developing countries.

The website publishes feature articles, infographics and videos, as well as access to the full magazine through subscription.

NanoChina news

This is NanoChina's news page, with latest and archived news relating to nanotechnology developments in China and East Asia. NanoChina was launched in February 2006 by the U.K. based Institute of Nanotechnology.

Peat-Portal

The Peat-Portal housed by the Global Environment Centre (GEC) is an online information portal on peatland management.  The site is dedicated to exchange of information, identification of problematic areas in management, sharing of ideas, and enhancing global awareness of pertinent issues in peatland management.  News and current issues on this topic are published in the newsletter, PeatMatters.

Plantwise

This initiative, run by the non-profit organisation CABI (the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International), aims to improve food security by reducing crop losses. It helps smallholder farmers by gathering and disseminating information about plant health via plant clinics and a knowledge bank. The knowledge bank is hosted on CABI's website, and contains key plant health information from across the world, including a diagnostic tool and factsheet library. A map is available to view pest and crop distribution data alongside other information, including climate data. The website also enables access to publications, and includes a media centre providing press releases, news, and multimedia.

Prolinnova

This programme was set up by several nongovernmental organisations to promote sustainable agriculture and natural resource management in developing nations. It aims to facilitate the use of indigenous knowledge to help farmers devise systems to cope with change, achieve food security, sustain livelihoods and protect the environment. It also works towards integrating local innovations into formal agricultural research.

The website offers information on projects arranged by country and project theme, as well as relevant news and events. It also publishes extensive resources including links to publications, training materials and a gallery with audiovisual resources.

SouthSouthNorth

The SouthSouthNorth Project (SSN) is a network of organisations, research institutions and consultants. Its aim is to provide expertise in order to help public and private stakeholders deal effectively with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). SSN operates in Brazil, South Africa, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

The Directory of Open Access Repositories (Opendoar)

OpenDOAR is a directory of open access repositories — institutional and subject-based archives of academic papers, books, datasets, conferences, patents and multimedia that are free to access.

The directory covers 29 topics including agriculture, technology, health, environment and medicine in over 50 languages.

Repositories listed in the directory can be searched — and statistically analysed with the help of OpenDOAR charts — by topic, language and content or software type.
