Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center

The New York-based Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center conducts basic research and clinical trials on HIV/AIDS, and is affiliated to The Rockefeller University. The website contains a brief fact sheet and a particularly clear graphical illustration of the stages of the HIV life cycle. The Center has recently begun a phase I clinical trial of an HIV vaccine that is particularly representative of the HIV strain most prevalent in China.

African AIDS Vaccine Research Programme

The African AIDS Vaccine Programme was conceived in June 2000 as a network of African experts, working together to promote and facilitate HIV vaccine research and evaluation in Africa. Sponsored by WHO-UNAIDS, its mission is to advocate and support a coordinated effort to contribute to the global HIV vaccine development goals, ensuring that appropriate and affordable vaccines are developed for Africa in the shortest possible time.

Afro AIDSInfo

AfroAIDSinfo is a web-based project of the South African Medical Research Council, which disseminates information about HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa to the media, researchers, health professionals, the public, educators and policy makers. The site has news and resources including research briefings, policy reports and health information, with a particular emphasis on access to antiretroviral drugs.

AIDS Education Global Information System

AEGiS, a non-profit organization that is a web-based reference for HIV/AIDS information. AEGiS is a virtual HIV/AIDS library containing reference materials and late-breaking information from HIV/AIDS-specific publications and news sources from around the world. The site disseminates and archives information daily, offers e-communication lines, such as an Ask the Doc forum and documents pandemics via global historical database.

AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition

AVAC is a community and consumer-based organisation dedicated to accelerating the development and availability of an HIV vaccine through independent analysis, policy advocacy, education and mobilisation. The website contains extensive and regularly updated news and progress reports on vaccine development, including the new AIDS Vaccine Clearing House containing FAQs, documents, and links to all the major sponsors of HIV vaccine trials, with additional specific information and links available in Thai, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

AIDSchannel

AIDSchannel is a multimedia web portal - hosted by OneWorld.net - for the exchange and sharing of news and information about HIV/AIDS. In particular it aims to promote sustainable development, social justice and human rights around the world. Resources include news, analysis, guest editorials, a weekly email digest and radio exchange. The site links to a searchable database of 1,500 member organisations, including NGOs, governments, research institutions and media.

AIDScience

This HIV/AIDS web portal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (publisher of Science) ceased operating in December 2003, but remains an important archive of documents relating to AIDS prevention, treatment and vaccine development. The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative has taken over the role of reviewing and highlighting recently published scientific literature.

AIDSinfo

A well-organised service from the US Department of Health and Human Services, AIDSinfo provides news and up-to-date information on all aspects of HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. This educational resource is conveniently divided into sections aimed at different levels of technical expertise: patients and the general public, health care professionals, and researchers. The site includes information on all federally approved treatments, HIV/AIDS research, links and an extensive glossary of scientific and medical HIV/AIDS terms (in both English and Spanish). The site also contains a database of international clinical trials for HIV vaccines and treatments, including in Africa and Asia.

AIDSmap

AIDSmap is an online information service on HIV/AIDS which provides well-written up-to-date news, information and international conference coverage, in partnership with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. Although much of the content is written for audiences in the United Kingdom and Europe, there are also features that will be particularly useful in developing countries, such as Treating HIV/AIDS: a training toolkit, which supports the expansion of treatment in resource-poor settings. The site also carries online databases containing lists of AIDS organisations in more than 150 countries, as well as treatment information.

Aidspan

Aidspan is a relatively new independent non-profit organisation based in New York that provides critical analysis, news and comment on the activities of the Global Fund. It publishes a regular newsletter, the Global Fund Observer, and guidance to developing countries on how to apply for Global Fund support for HIV/AIDS projects.

AIDSthai

AIDSthai is an information portal in both English and Thai, covering AIDS research, prevention and care activities in Thailand, supported by the Thai government's Ministry of Public Health. The website includes background information and links on vaccine research, including the Vaccine Trial Centre at Mahidol University in Bangkok.

AlertNet: Alerting humanitarians to emergencies

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

Alliance for Microbicide Development

The Alliance for Microbicide Development brings together pharmaceutical companies, non-profit research institutions and advocacy groups dedicated to the development of topical microbicides. A major highlight of its website is the new Microbicides Research and Development Database. This contains detailed information on the status of individual microbicide products, principle investigators and trial locations. (Free registration is needed for access, and some information is restricted). There is also an excellent weekly digest of news relating to microbicides reserach and development, and the Microbicide Quarterly, which has meeting reports, interviews and expert-authored articles on all areas from basic research to clinical and regulatory issues.

American Foundation for AIDS Research

AmFAR is a major non-profit organisation that provides funding for AIDS research, prevention, treatment education and advocacy, including a number of global initiatives. The site also includes background information - such as a useful 'basic facts' factsheet - and an extensive glossary on HIV/AIDS related terms.

Avert

This website provides news and information on HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and research, including global HIV/AIDS news stories as reported in the UK media and from African sources (although there is no searchable archive). The site has a section for personal stories from people living with, and affected by, HIV/AIDS, and information about many topics, including treatment of HIV/AIDS and its related opportunistic infections, HIV/TB, and prevention of mother to child transmission. It also carries country and regional-level statistics and has an image library.

AVERTing HIV and AIDS (AVERT)

This international HIV/AIDS charity dedicates a section of its website to traditional medicine, and with good reason — traditional medicines are especially popular with people who have HIV. The website provides advice for those seeking traditional remedies for HIV, lists potential therapies and highlights the role of traditional healers in combating HIV in Africa. It advocates that traditional healers are well placed to encourage HIV prevention, and convince people to get tested for HIV if they are at risk.

BBC: The AIDS Debate

Launched as part of the BBC's AIDS Season in November 2003, this website contains news updates, features and analysis on HIV/AIDS around the world, as well sections on the biology and spread of HIV.

Biblioteca Virtual de Ciencias Sociales de América Latina y el Caribe de la Red CLACSO

This is a virtual library of Latin American social science papers maintained by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). It provides open and free access to more than 4,000 full-text books, periodical articles and other documents, in Spanish.

European-Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership Programme

Under its Framework Six funding programme, this new European Union initiative aims to translate medical research results into clinical trials in developing countries, particularly in Africa. The first move is to provide 200 million Euros for the development of new medicines and vaccines for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. The website contains a general outline of this scheme and information about its projects.

Family Health International

Family Health International is a non-profit organisation that supports the improvement of international public health through research, education, and other services through a variety of partners worldwide. Its web section on HIV/AIDS contains fact sheets, reports and other documents on a range of issues and programmes, including the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The organisation has a particular interest in microbicides and has been involved in clinical trials in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States. FHI also provides the scientific management for the Microbicide Science Working Group of the HIV Prevention Trials Network, and collaborates with CONRAD's Global Microbicide Project.
