AlertNet: Alerting humanitarians to emergencies

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

CDC avian flu page

The avian flu website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is part of the US government's Department of Health and Human Services. It provides up-to-date information about virus strains and their spread in both animals and humans, giving detailed scientific background information. It also provides information and guidance for specific groups of people, such as health professionals, the poultry industry and travelers. The website is available in Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy

The CIDRAP avian flu website publishes news written by in-house journalists as well as links to free stories appearing elsewhere. It hosts lists of guidelines and selected research papers, with links to full articles where available.

The site's detailed, up-to-date, overview documents are particularly useful. The first of these, on agricultural and wildlife considerations, defines avian flu and describes its hosts, transmission, diagnosis, treatment and prevention amongst other topics. The second looks at the implications of bird flu for human disease. It describes available lab tests, epidemiological and clinical features and available treatments. The current status of candidate vaccines, travel recommendations and surveillance are also all considered at length.

Flu in China; flu information centre

A bilingual Chinese news aggregator for information on bird flu. It provides useful links to new scientific research, public health advice, and a discussion forum. The site is maintained by a company called the Hangzhou Neuro-Hemin Biotech Company, and is funded by registration fees. Paying subscribers can access more information.

GRAIN bird flu page

GRAIN is a nongovernmental organisation that promotes sustainable management of agricultural biodiversity. The bird flu page of its website provides free access to a number of publications and websites on bird flu and its impact on small-scale farmers in the developing world. The list of publications includes a commentary on the problems created by a top-down approach to controlling bird flu, as well as GRAIN's report on the role of the poultry industry in spreading the disease — available in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

This blog provides comprehensive coverage of bird flu news and developments. It is frequently updated and contains a number of links to other relevant H5N1 resources, including journal articles, government sites and audio-video files. Links to French language websites are also provided.

The Flu Wiki

The Flu Wiki aims to help local communities prepare for and cope with a possible influenza pandemic by collecting information and encouraging discussion. It is a collaborative website that allows any user to edit content, and has an extensive list of other online resources relating to all aspects of avian flu and pandemic preparedness, and a popular online discussion forum.

A website supported by the poultry industry that provides news on bird flu from publications across the world and a quick guide to recognising avian flu in poultry.

WHO Avian influenza

The WHO is coordinating the global response to human cases of H5N1. The site gives information on the virus for the general public as well as more technical resources for experts. The associated media centre provides news stories, statements and media notes. The WHO regularly publishes a table of confirmed human cases of avian influenza.

World Organisation for Animal Health Avian Influenza

The OIE produces an avian influenza portal for national veterinary services and veterinary professionals, farmers, media and the general public. They compile an update on cases of H5-type avian influenza in animals, which includes disease outbreak maps and graphs.
