AlertNet: Alerting humanitarians to emergencies

A project of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, AlertNet is a news aggregator that aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the globe, particularly 'forgotten' emergencies that rarely make headlines. It publishes news from over 400 aid agencies and other media outlets across a range of topics, from natural disasters to climate change to health. AlertNet also provides tools for journalists, including facts and figures, crisis briefings and training modules.

BirdLife International - avian influenza

BirdLife International is a global partnership of conservation organisations. This statement outlines the group's most recent summary of the avian flu situation relating to wild birds. The link to frequently asked questions may also be useful.

CDC avian flu page

The avian flu website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is part of the US government's Department of Health and Human Services. It provides up-to-date information about virus strains and their spread in both animals and humans, giving detailed scientific background information. It also provides information and guidance for specific groups of people, such as health professionals, the poultry industry and travelers. The website is available in Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy

The CIDRAP avian flu website publishes news written by in-house journalists as well as links to free stories appearing elsewhere. It hosts lists of guidelines and selected research papers, with links to full articles where available.

 

The site's detailed, up-to-date, overview documents are particularly useful. The first of these, on agricultural and wildlife considerations, defines avian flu and describes its hosts, transmission, diagnosis, treatment and prevention amongst other topics. The second looks at the implications of bird flu for human disease. It describes available lab tests, epidemiological and clinical features and available treatments. The current status of candidate vaccines, travel recommendations and surveillance are also all considered at length.

Flu in China; flu information centre

A bilingual Chinese news aggregator for information on bird flu. It provides useful links to new scientific research, public health advice, and a discussion forum. The site is maintained by a company called the Hangzhou Neuro-Hemin Biotech Company, and is funded by registration fees. Paying subscribers can access more information.

Global Forum for Health Research

The Global Forum for Health Research provides evidence, tools and discussion forums for decision-makers in research funding and policy to improve the health of the poor. Although it covers issues for both infectious and non-communicable diseases, the agency recognises that mental health problems are severely neglected in developing countries. As well as links to various publications and reports, the website also hosts RealHealthNews, which aims to share news on research and interventions that can improve the health of those in developing countries.

GRAIN bird flu page

GRAIN is a nongovernmental organisation that promotes sustainable management of agricultural biodiversity. The bird flu page of its website provides free access to a number of publications and websites on bird flu and its impact on small-scale farmers in the developing world. The list of publications includes a commentary on the problems created by a top-down approach to controlling bird flu, as well as GRAIN's report on the role of the poultry industry in spreading the disease — available in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

H5N1: News and Resources about Avian Flu

This blog provides comprehensive coverage of bird flu news and developments. It is frequently updated and contains a number of links to other relevant H5N1 resources, including journal articles, government sites and audio-video files. Links to French language websites are also provided.

This blog about avian flu is written by Crawford Kilian, a Canadian college instructor and writer. He has gathered and commented on news articles related to bird flu on a daily basis since March 2005. The site also offers useful links to international news sources, health agencies, journal articles, and government websites relating to avian flu.

NewsNow – Bird Flu

A UK-based news portal that scans the Internet for headlines with the words 'bird flu'. It is updated by about 21,000 news sources every five minutes, and uses national flag symbols to help readers quickly identify the country of origin of each news report.

Reuters AlertNet Bird flu

This Reuters site covers new developments in the bird flu crisis, and offers a free email alert service. Features of the site include a summary of the bird flu crisis, a timeline of events and links to other online resources.

The FAO avian influenza page

The avian flu page of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), concentrating on the threat the disease poses to animal health. It provides links to a small collection of important documents that outline the organisation's guidelines for tackling the spread of avian flu in livestock.

The Flu Wiki

The Flu Wiki aims to help local communities prepare for and cope with a possible influenza pandemic by collecting information and encouraging discussion. It is a collaborative website that allows any user to edit content, and has an extensive list of other online resources relating to all aspects of avian flu and pandemic preparedness, and a popular online discussion forum.

The OIE – avian flu in animals

The World Health Organization for Animal Health (OIE) was set up to ensure transparency in the reporting of global animal disease. It is an intergovernmental organisation with 167 member countries that report the animal diseases detected on their territories. The website lists confirmed cases of avian flu and links to the official reports filed by each country.

A website supported by the poultry industry that provides news on bird flu from publications across the world and a quick guide to recognising avian flu in poultry.

The WHO avian flu homepage

This page is the starting point for all World Health Organization (WHO) information about avian flu. The WHO focuses on bird flu's relevance to human health; it is coordinating the global response to human cases of H5N1 avian flu and monitoring the corresponding threat of an influenza pandemic. This website has 'situation updates' in the centre of the page, below which are relevant WHO press releases, meetings and speeches. Links down the right hand side of the page provide access to technical guidelines, information for the general public, and region-specific webpages about avian flu.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: malaria

The site is aimed at lay readers, including travellers to malaria-affected countries, physicians and health workers. It contains extensive background information on malaria disease, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. It also covers a brief outline of the history of the discovery of malaria.

WHO Avian influenza

The WHO is coordinating the global response to human cases of H5N1. The site gives information on the virus for the general public as well as more technical resources for experts. The associated media centre provides news stories, statements and media notes. The WHO regularly publishes a table of confirmed human cases of avian influenza.

World Bank report on the economic impact of avian influenza

In this short report, the World Bank summarises the main economic impacts of both the outbreaks of avian influenza in poultry and the potential human influenza pandemic. It identifies two main categories of economic impacts: the costs of sickness or death resulting from the disease outbreaks; and the costs associated with public and private efforts to prevent the emergence or spread of the disease and to treat its effects. A list of additional resources are provided at the top right of the page, notably a speech on the same topic, delivered in November 2005, by Milan Brahmbhatt, World Bank lead economist for the East Asia and Pacific.
