"The risk of bird flu is serious in Sudan as birds from East Asia and Europe, where cases have been reported, migrate along the river Nile where most Sudanese live," says Abdel Wahid Saeed Ali, a virologist at the University of Khartoum.

He says it will be difficult to monitor wild birds in the remote Sudd marshes — one of the world's biggest inland wetlands, and a major destination for migrating birds.

Sudan has banned all imports of poultry products and has increased the number of inspections at all ports of entry.
