Why Uganda's science policies are failing to bear fruit

Uganda's policy of enforcing science subjects to boost industrialisation has failed because of ill-equipped school labs and teachers' inability to spot talented students, says Deo T. Kabwende in The Monitor.

Parents are also to blame, he says, for pushing their children into subjects in which they are not interested.

Such factors explain why "lecturers spend much time training teachers that never want to teach, doctors that never have interest in medicine, engineers that hate field work, journalists that dread newsrooms and agriculturalists who want to sit in offices!"
