Mapping the road to the knowledge economy

Knowledge-driven development has recently emerged as an important engine of growth and poverty reduction.

Elements of the knowledge economy are already quite visible in Brazil, China and India — which together represent 45 per cent of the world’s population.

A benchmarking tool developed by the World Bank Institute — known as the knowledge assessment methodology (KAM) — can be used to assess these countries’ progress and identify the challenges that they must face in order to succeed in the global knowledge economy.
