The Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities provides rankings compiled each year from 2003 onwards. Universities are ranked using a combination of indicators of academic and research performance such as Nobel Prize winners, highly cited researchers and number of articles published in Nature and Science.
The authors explain how the data is compiled and present summary statistics by region and country, as well as a full list of the top 500 institutions worldwide.
AfricaLink, run by USAID, offers technical assistance to regional networks of African policymakers and scientists working in agriculture, natural resource management, and the environment. Specific services offered include access to electronic mail, resource centres and technical support desks, and training programmes for network leaders.
The AAS is a not-for-profit organisation promoting the growth of scientific and technological capabilities to support development in Africa. Its website outlines each of the organisation's activities including capacity building, training, publication and dissemination of scientific materials, research and development, and advocacy.
The ACTS is an international, intergovernmental think-tank based in Nairobi that publishes and disseminates new information on science, technology and environmental policy. It runs research and capacity-building programmes in biodiversity and environmental governance, science and technology literacy, energy and water security, agriculture and food security, technological advances and health policy. It is also involved in national, regional and international outreach activities, working with universities and governments in Africa and beyond.
AJOL is an online database of more than 50 African science journals. Run by
INASP, it provides access to tables of contents and, when available, abstracts and links to full text articles. It also offers a photocopy document delivery service for all of its listed titles. Users must register (free).
AMANET promotes capacity building in African research and training institutes that specialise in malaria studies. Its objectives include promoting collaboration among stakeholders, creating international awareness about the malaria problem in Africa, identifying test sites, developing infrastructure and support for field and clinical trials, and increasing good management practices in malaria research. AMANET produces a biannual online newsletter to disseminate research findings and grant and workshop calls. It also hosts a discussion forum for registered members.
AMCOST provides a forum for formulating and implementing policies for science, technology and innovation issues that have an impact on African development. It was established by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union in November 2003, and has since developed and adopted Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action.
AMCOST's website outlines ongoing projects in biodiversity, energy, water, material sciences, mathematics and space science technologies, among others. It also offers information on the activities and rationale behind both the African Panel on Biotechnology and the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative.
AFRO-NETS is a network of
more than 20 health research institutes and networks. It was established in 1997 to facilitate the exchange of information among networks involved in health research for development in Anglophone Africa. It runs an
electronic mailing list that acts as a forum for discussion to support collaboration in the fields such as capacity building, planning and conducting research, and transformation of research recommendations. The list also serves as a forum for announcing meetings, training courses and other events of interest to the networks.
The ATDF provides a place for inventors, business bureaus and technology transfer agents to exchange and disseminate information on innovations, technologies, business opportunities and trends in global trade. It aims to stimulate links between research organisations, industry and government. It also helps organise trade fairs and publishes a free online journal for research on science, technology and innovation for African development.
The ATPS is a multidisciplinary network of researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders interested in generating, promoting and strengthening innovative technology and industrial policies in Africa. It provides small grants for research on science and technology policy in sub-Saharan countries and disseminates results through publications, workshops, conferences and the Internet. The network also organises training for policymakers, legislators, researchers and leaders in the private sector.
TIMSS is an international study of science and mathematics achievement of schoolchildren carried out in four-year cycles. The purpose of the study is to help developing countries measure the science and maths scores of their students, compare these across participating countries and assess the impact of educational reforms. This achieved by putting in place and streamlining systems and processes to collect standardised academic achievement data. Sixty-one countries are participating in the 2007 study, including 15 Arab countries. The website hosts TIMSS-related documents for the Arab world including regional and country reports of the 2003 study.
The ADEA website provides a forum for policymakers, educators and researchers to discuss education policies in Sub-Saharan Africa. It encourages dialogue and links between African education ministries and external partners through the ADEA secretariat and working group meetings — all activities, materials and presentations are available online.
ADEA publishes articles, books, papers, and reports on the development of education in Africa. It also hosts databases, including contact information for development agencies and African education ministries.
The AAU, based in Accra, promotes consultation, exchange of information and cooperation among higher education institutes in Africa. It provides fellowships and small grants for postgraduate studies and staff exchanges. It also runs programmes to study higher education management and assure the quality of its member institutions. The website gives summaries of all these activities and links to AAU newsletters and publications. It also offers a list of online resources relevant to higher education in Africa.
The e-Africa Commission is part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), charged with managing the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Africa. It is responsible for developing and overseeing policies and strategies for the ICT sector. It also runs both the NEPAD e-schools initiative to teach ICT to Africans in primary and secondary education, and the NEPAD ICT infrastructure programme, aiming to connect all African countries to a broadband network.
The ECA helps African governments develop policies for economic and social development, including enhancing the role of science and technology. It carries out policy research, disseminates information, promotes co-operation and offers policy advice to different stakeholders. It also runs a collaborative policy research network — the ECA Science and Technology Network — promoting the dissemination and exchange of information on science and technology management and policy issues in Africa.
EdStats, developed by the World Bank, collects data on education from national reports, UNESCO (UN Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development to provide educational statistics for over 200 countries and regions.
It also includes World Bank public expenditure data from 2002 onwards as well as projections of educational attainment and enrolment rates until 2050.
Data can be custom searched but is also available in pre-defined reports by country or topic, for example on the Millennium Development Goals or private education expenditure.
The Association is a non-governmental and non-profit-making organisation operated for scientific and educational purposes. In spite of the word "European" in its name, the organisation is international, with some 25 per cent of its members coming from other continents. EASE aims to promote improved communication in science by providing efficient means for cooperation among editors in all disciplines of science, and to assist in the efficient operation of publications in the sciences.
The IAU, established by UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), brings together higher education institutions and organisations from 150 countries worldwide. It publishes information on past conferences and links to key publications, research and policy statements.

The INHEA, supported by the Ford Foundation and housed at the Boston College Center for International Higher Eduation, is a network of academics, practitioners and policymakers working in higher education (HE) in Africa.
It publishes news, commentaries and research on key HE issues. It also provides a list of experts and researchers in HE in Africa, and links to organisations active in scholarship and development work. The INHEA's country profiles describe HE practice across Africa and provide data on enrolment and funding.
Knowledge for Development is a web-based source of information on science and technology for agriculture and rural development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. It promotes collaboration between agricultural research and development scientists and technologists in ACP countries, and facilitates dialogue between ACP and European communities with the aim of strengthening policy formulation on science and technology issues.
