South Korea is to study whether a nuclear power plant could be built in Vietnam, following an agreement between the countries’ science and technology vice-ministers in Hanoi on 22 October.

Vietnam currently has no nuclear reactors. But during the past year it has been investigating the feasibility of using nuclear power to meet its electricity needs.

Under the agreement, the countries will pursue a total of 12 new research projects on agriculture, medicine and resources. South Korea will also train high-ranking Vietnamese officials to become specialists in atomic energy, and has promised to invite 56 Vietnamese scientists to work in Korea by 2003.
